VOLUNTEERS & OFFICIALS

Volunteers are the backbone of our swimming community and play a vital role in shaping the success of our athletes. They provide the support needed for athletes to chase their dreams and reach new heights. Your passion, time, and energy create a positive environment that helps athletes perform at their best.

There are many ways to get involved—whether through accredited or non-accredited roles, every volunteer makes an impact. It’s not just about helping; it’s about becoming part of a vibrant swimming community!

From timekeeping to officiating, there’s a role for everyone. By stepping up, you enrich your own experience and contribute to your athlete’s success. These moments become more than just competitions; they become an integral part of the journey toward achieving their dreams.

Let's explore the various ways you can lend a hand below and join us in building a stronger, more vibrant swimming community. Together, we can make a lasting impact!

Accredited Roles

Behind every competition is a team of trained Technical Officials who make sure racing is fair, accurate, and consistent. Roles like Inspector of Turns, Judge of Stroke, Starter, and Referee are essential for maintaining the integrity of the sport.

To take on these roles, formal training is required. Swimming NZ’s new learning pathway makes it easy to get started, with clear steps and support along the way. Training combines e-learning, seminars, and practical experience on the pool deck, supported by a learning log and feedback from assessors.

With a sharp eye, steady presence, and the right guidance, you’ll gain the skills to officiate at every level of competition.

Non-Accredited Roles

Want to get involved? No quals needed—just enthusiasm!

It’s a great way to meet people, learn new skills, and be part of the action. We’ll show you what to do, so no experience is required.

How to help: Fill in the duty form for each competition. Your support makes a big difference.

You could be timekeeping on the pool deck, leading the team as Chief Timekeeper, marshalling athletes to keep events running smoothly, managing the electronic timing system as an AOE Operator, or recording official results. Not sure what suits you? Let us know your interests—there’s a place for everyone.
